Motor Biking – a Great Way to Tour Spectacular South Africa

“We go for cruises… our speeds are sedate so as to enjoy the scenery” – the Silver Riders MCC, Cape Town.
“Family orientated motorcycle club” – Mountain Warriors MCC, Sabie.
“We’re a social biking club” – Chilli MC Jo’burg.
“Having fun, being free” – Ghost Riders MCC, Polokwane.

Today, most of those who are passionate about motor biking aren’t into anything sinister. The motor biking image of yesteryear has changed, and even though many still wear badges that might suggest otherwise, the members of motor bike clubs these days sign up mainly for the thrill of the open road, for socialising with like-minded bike lovers, for cruising.

Cruising on a high-powered motorbike is such a special, different way of getting around, of taking in the wonderful scenery of South Africa. No bodywork or mirrors at eye-level to interfere with the views, and when you’re motor biking you’re outside, as it were. You can smell things around you, you can feel the air. Even with a helmet on, you’re always conscious of the growl of the engine, and that incredible torque – unbeatable power to weight ratio compared to anything on four wheels or more. And it’s sexy – with or without your partner riding pillion!

Speed and motor biking go hand in hand. But it’s less about breaking the speed limit and more about the wind in your face, about being able to accelerate so much faster on your two-wheeler than almost anything else on the road. Overtaking is so easy – as is climbing up a steep mountain pass. There’s something just so satisfying about eating up the miles on those long stretches of tarmac. And let’s not even talk about the incredibly low fuel consumption relative to all those gas guzzlers with not even half the amount of ‘get up and go’ in them.

One of the very few downsides to motor biking through scenic South Africa is that the more you cruise the more you tend to take things for granted and the more dangerous it becomes. One can forget how vulnerable you are when motor biking, but there’s not much protecting you from the metal, tar or concrete that you’ll come up against in the event of a crash. You need to counter that feeling of being immortal…

And of course, there are quite a few motor biking options to choose from when it comes to the type and brand of machine that you’re going to do your motor biking on. Broadly speaking, whereas some guys go for the ‘sit up straight and high’ or ‘lean back and put your feet up’ varieties, others prefer the sort of superbike that oozes ‘hi-performance’, the type that you tend to ‘lie forward onto or into’, bikes that you wouldn’t be surprised to see on the racing track. Whether you’re a Harley person, or would rather be astride one of the Japanese or European marques, says a fair bit about your personality, your outlook on life. Different kinds of motor bikes and motor biking people entirely!
