UK’s Most Haunted Airport ? Heathrow Airport London

Sunday, March 6th, 2011

The month of October brings one my favourite holidays – Halloween. It’s a fantastic chance to get together and tell each other spooky stories and weird happenings. It’s also great for the kids thanks to the amount of candy they get trick or treating! However for some of us who will be working and travelling unfortunately we won’t be able to sample the delights of Halloween… or will we?

If you are travelling across the UK this month you better keep your eye out for spooks on your travels – even the airports aren’t safe from the things that go bump in the night. We have a look at one of the UK’s most haunted airport.

Heathrow Airport – London

Heathrow is one of the busiest UK airports and handles the highest number of international travellers in the World. It is surprising to find that Heathrow is also the most haunted airport in the UK and one that is haunted by possibly the most famous highwayman in Britain – Dick Turpin.

Dick Turpin was revered by the poor as he robbed from the rich to line his pockets however it is the exploits of his gang that got him the biggest press coverage back in the day. Exploits of his gang included murder, setting people on fire (whilst alive) and torture. When finally caught he was sentenced to death by gallows – supposedly with a smile on his face. So how does this relate to Heathrow? Dick Turpin being a highway man means that he is constantly moving from one opportunity to another – even after death.

Sightings of Turpin have been reported along the A1 motorway and in particular Heathrow Airport. Some of those who work at Heathrow state that they can feel the hot breath on the back of their necks followed by the calls of a man barking.

Another famous incident follows the tragic crash of a Belgian Airlines Plane in 1948. The airline crash was a result of a failed landing during a heavy fog and took the lives on everyone on board. Despite this the emergency services endeavoured to fight through the plane wreckage to see whether there were any survivors. As the men worked through they were approached by a man in a hat who asked whether they had found his briefcase. Startled the men turned to see the man fade away into the fog. Later they found the body of the man deep within the wreckage. The man, dressed in grey, is reported to haunt the VIP lounge of Heathrow and the busiest parts of the run way still looking for his briefcase. Some travellers even report sightings of grey legs with no bodies sitting at lonesome benches…

So there you go – from famous ghosts to unfortunately tragedies it seems that Heathrow is a lot busier than you probably think. Remember if you feel a burning heat or the sound of mad dogs when you are alone in Heathrow don’t look back – you might not like what you see…
